About the team The Applied AI Engineering team is responsible for ensuring the safe and effective deployment of generative AI applications for developers and enterprises. We act as a trusted advisor and thought partner for our API customers, working to build an effective backlog of frontier AI use cases for their industry and drive them to production through strong technical guidance. As an Applied AI Engineer in the Digital Native segment, you’ll work with industry-leading technology companies like Stripe, Uber, and Reddit to bring new AI capabilities into the products their customers use every day. You’ll partner directly with experienced product and engineering teams to turn frontier model capabilities into new features and agentic experiences. The work combines rapid experimentation with the demands of established products: complex systems, real users, and high expectations for quality and performance. Lessons from these deployments inform OpenAI’s product and research teams. About the role You will combine deep technical judgment, hands-on engineering, and customer leadership to take ambitious ideas from use-case selection and architecture through prototyping, evaluation, production launch, and scale. You will write and debug code, build evaluation systems, resolve complex integrations, and guide decisions involving model behavior, reliability, latency, cost, safety, security, governance, and operational readiness. Success is measured by production systems, sustained adoption, and meaningful customer impact – not simply activity or successful demonstrations. This is a rare opportunity to work on consequential real-world deployments at the frontier of AI while directly influencing how OpenAI’s products evolve. This role is based in our São Paulo, Brazil office. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees. In this role, you will: Deeply embed with our most sophisticated and technical platform customers, serving as their technical thought partner in ideating and building novel applications on our API. Scale the Applied AI Engineer function through sharing knowledge and publishing best-practices to our internal and external repositories. Evaluate emerging model capabilities, developer tools, and implementation patterns, and translate relevant advances into practical recommendations for customer applications. Work alongside customer teams through on-site workshops and implementation sessions, helping resolve technical challenges and strengthen relationships. This includes occasional travel. You’ll thrive in this role if you: Bring 8+ years of deep, hands-on technical experience and an eagerness to work closely with customers. Our team consists of former startup founders, software and ML engineers, technical product managers and solution architects. Have a track record of personally leading complex, production-scale AI/ML systems from ambiguous discovery through production deployment, adoption, and measurable business impact. Are passionate about being on the forefront of the latest AI industry trends, incl. agent architecture patterns, advanced prompt and context engineering, evaluation frameworks, safety, and security. Are proficient in Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, or similar languages and are comfortable building production-quality prototypes and reference implementations. Demonstrate strong technical judgment: know when to go deep personally, when to mobilize specialists, and how to make clear recommendations with incomplete information. Have a humble attitude and an eagerness to help others with empathy. Operate with high horsepower, are adept at frequent context switching and working on multiple projects at once with expansive ownership, and ruthlessly prioritize. Thrive in dynamic environments and can navigate ambiguity with ease. You stay current with the latest tools like Codex, Claude Code, and other AI-assisted development environments. You're pragmatic about choosing the right tool for the job, focusing on what delivers the most value to users. Thoughtful problem-solving: For you, problem-solving starts with a clear and accurate understanding of the context. You can decompose tricky problems and work towards a clean solution, by yourself or with teammates. You're comfortable asking for help when you get stuck. You think about the implications of what you're building and how it will impact real people's lives. Team player: For you, work isn't a solo endeavor. You enjoy collaborating cross-functionally to accomplish shared goals, and you care about learning, growing, and helping others to do the same. Passion for web applications: You can work with others to build and maintain quality user interfaces for a big audience, using Web technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a modern UI framework like React. Familiarity with backend systems: You understand how parts of a system fit together—from the user interface to the data model. Familiarity with database systems like Postgres, MySQL or MongoDB is a plus. Nice to Haves: You have experience with any part of our technology stack: React, TypeScript, Node.js, Postgres, and Elasticsearch. You’re a builder who finds joy in building software solutions for yourself or others. You care about the interaction between technology and society, the ways in which they inform each other, and our responsibility as technologists to be conscious of that relationship. You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work. For some roles, AI fluency is a core requirement — when that’s the case, we'll say so explicitly in the qualifications. People who thrive here don’t treat AI as a novelty. They use it to think better, and make their work easier for others to build on. Equal Opportunity & Accommodations We hire talented people from a wide range of backgrounds. About the Team OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. The Identity team builds the foundational systems that enable people, organizations, devices, and agents to securely access OpenAI products. The team works across consumer and enterprise experiences, including account structures, sign-in, authentication, recovery, privacy, permissions, administration, and agent identity. As AI systems become increasingly capable of acting on behalf of people and organizations, we are defining new models for authorization and trust across human-to-agent and agent-to-agent interactions. About the Role In this role, you’ll lead design for foundational identity experiences across OpenAI’s products. You’ll make permissions, access, risk, and administration feel clear, safe, and genuinely usable—whether someone is securing a personal account, administering access across an enterprise, signing in to another product with ChatGPT, or authorizing an agent to perform sensitive work. Your work will span established identity challenges and emerging interaction models without established design conventions. You’ll help define how users understand what an agent can access, who or what it is acting on behalf of, and when confirmation or stronger authentication should appear. Working closely with product, engineering, security, privacy, and design, you’ll translate complex policies and technical systems into coherent, trustworthy experiences. This role is based in our San Francisco HQ. We offer relocation assistance to new employees. In this role, you will: Lead the design direction for identity, account security, permissions, and administrative experiences across OpenAI’s consumer and enterprise products. Design and ship high-quality experiences spanning sign-in, authentication, account recovery, device accounts, privacy, access controls, governance, and remediation. Define mental models and interaction patterns for human-to-agent and agent-to-agent identity, authorization, and trust. Help users understand what people, systems, and agents can access or do on their behalf. Design security checks and confirmation flows that protect sensitive actions while minimizing unnecessary friction. Partner closely with product management, engineering, security, privacy, and design peers to shape strategy, roadmap, and execution. Navigate complex roles, policies, dependencies, and product states to create systems that remain coherent as they scale. Contribute to and evolve the design systems and patterns used across OpenAI’s identity experiences. You might thrive in this role if you: Are a systems-oriented product thinker who can reason across complex states, dependencies, policies, and user types. Have designed role-based access or permissions for organizations with multiple teams, resources, or levels of administration. Understand how to balance security, usability, and business needs in high-stakes workflows. Have strong UX/UI and interaction design skills, with a high bar for contemporary craft, clarity, and quality. Can turn complicated technical capabilities and policies into mental models that users can understand and trust. Are comfortable shaping direction when both the underlying technology and established user expectations are evolving. Have experience with enterprise, platform, desktop, infrastructure, or similarly complex product environments. Are excited to establish new conventions for identity and access in a world where AI agents increasingly act on behalf of people and organizations.
